Yellow Violets.

At least 10 baby yellow violets.
All in these 2 places along the trail.
Viola nuttallii is a perennial herbaceous plant in the violet family, and is one of the few violet species with lanceolate leaves. It is native to the western Canada and the north-central and western United States, appearing in upper steppe lands, forests, and alpine ridges. The genus name Viola means violet in Latin. Lanceolate means shaped like the head of a lance; of a narrow oval shape tapering to a point at each end -"the leaves are lanceolate".
The specific epithet of this violet commemorates Thomas Nuttall a noted botanist who traveled the western plains in the early 1800's.
(Frederick Traugott Pursh (February 4, 1774 – July 11, 1820) was a German–American botanist.)
